The Caves of Altamira is a cultural milestone in the history of mankind. The discovery of the paintings of the Altamira Cave in 1879 by D. Marcelino Sanz Sautuola meant the discovery of Paleolithic rock art, and its most spectacular manifestation.

Bison, horses, deer, hands and mysterious signs, paintings and prints are an expression of the inhabitants of the cave 15,000 years ago during the Upper Paleolithic. Today, the most important and famous caves of the Paleolithic world. Altamira Cave was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is one of the most important jewels of Cantabria, and probably in Spain, as its universal recognition.

Work is in process of conducting a new study of the conditions of conservation of the cave of Altamira, which have temporarily stopped the visits. However in 2001 the Museum opened Altamira, which has an exact replica of the original cave, which have recreated all the details and conditions identically.
